Constellations

Self-justification

Digital Thoughts, volume one.

Most of my work is made on film, but all of the colour images and a few of the black and white ones on these pages were made on digital cameras.

I'm not interested in most of the technical differences, but there's one quality of digital that has influenced one area of my work in particular.

I've used high resolution full frame Sony cameras for years (A7rII and currently A7r4a) as well as the 'medium format' Fujifilm GFX 100S, both combined with excellent modern lenses, often made by the manufacturer or by the estimable Sigma.

As a result many of my digital camera pictures capture a truly astonishing level of detail, like the millions of tiny bubbles in the image above.

But why is that important, especially for a photographer who prizes feeling over image quality? Well, usually it doesn't, which is why I shoot so much 35mm mono film, but for the ongoing series that I call Constellations it really matters.

You see I'm a devotee of several Japanese aesthetic principles, among them 一期一会 (one life, one meeting) - which emphasises the uniqueness and unrepeatability of every moment. And the picture above, along with others that I intend to share with you in due course, emphasise that point.
